SAT Exam
The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is designed to measure a student’s ability to understand and process elements in three subjects: reading, writing, and math. SAT scores are calculated based on a student’s performance relative to other test-takers, and have proven to be an indicator of collegiate success.
ACT Exam
The questions on the American College Testing (ACT) tests the core subjects: English, reading, mathematics, and science that students typically study through their third year of high school.

SAT Essay: An Analytical Essay
As you read the passage below, consider how Jimmy C. uses:
Evidence, such as facts or examples, to support claims.
Reasoning to develop ideas and to connect claims and
evidence.
Stylistic or persuasive elements, such as a word choice or appeals to emotion, to add power to the ideas expressed.
Write an essay in which you explain how Jimmy Carter builds an argument to persuade his audience that the Artic National Wildlife Refuge should not be developed for industry. In your essay, analyze how Carter uses one or more of the features listed above (or features of your own choice) to strengthen the logic and persuasiveness of his argument. Be sure that your analysis focuses on the most relevant features of the passage.
Your essay should not explain whether you agree with Jimmy’s claims, but rather how Jimmy builds and argument to persuade his audience.
ACT Essay: A Persuasive Essay
Evaluates 4 areas: ideas and analysis, development and support, organization, and language use. (40 minutes long)
Students are provided several perspectives and asked to create their own analysis of a complex issue.

High Level Thoughts
• SAT focuses more on reading, more advanced reading and has Common Core-styled math.
• ACT focuses more on speed and has more rigorous science sections.
• Students should take baseline tests to determine which test is best for them.
• When students cross from one test to the other, 70% learning will transfer.
